White Gold Rings Vs Platinum Rings

By ted crist

If you want to buy wedding rings, engagement rings or just for your rings collection and you like white color, most likely you’ll choice white gold rings or platinum rings for your options. There are plus minus sides of each material, here are some of them.

Purity

White is not a natural color of gold. To create white gold rings, you must mix gold with white materials, such as silver, nickel or palladium. 75% gold + 25% white materials = 18K white gold rings, while 58, 5% gold + 41, 5% white materials = 14K white gold rings. After that, white gold rings usually coated with rhodium to enhance its white color.

Platinum rings purity are more than 90% (approximately 95%). Platinum rings also heavier and denser metal than white gold rings. White is a natural color of platinum and doesn’t need rhodium coating to make platinum rings looks white.

Durability

Platinum rings are more durable and more scratch resistance than white gold rings. Platinum rings also don’t need to replated with rhodium, which mean less maintenance.

Price

Platinum rings are more pure, more rare and more difficult to manufactured, which in result will make platinum rings more expensive than white gold rings.

Conclusion

If you buy rings just for your collection I think it’s enough if you buy white gold rings. If you buy white gold rings, you can have approximately two white gold rings than one platinum ring with same price, which means you will have more ring collections and you won’t get easily bored. But if price is not a problem for you, then platinum rings is your selection.

You may consider buying platinum rings for your wedding rings, because you’ll wear it forever. But if you can’t afford it or you think it’s not necessary to buy platinum rings, for example, you won’t wear your wedding rings at work or on your daily life, you can buy white gold rings as your wedding rings or engagement rings. If white gold rings begin to dull, you only need to spend some time and a little cost to replated white gold rings with rhodium, and your white gold ring will shine again. Ask your jewelry stores near you to do that.
